Rule Number 1: Relax

Downtime! Never underestimate the power of taking time to unwind. Self-care is a beautiful, nurturing and uplifting journey. Incorporating downtime into your self-care routine is an essential component. It is ironic that, as we all love to keep track of what we feel we ‘need’ in our online baskets and wish lists, we can lose sight of what is really important and what we really need! What do I mean by this? What I mean is that by creating habits which allow us to cultivate peace of mind, and a state of genuine happiness (long-term) we achieve greater benefit than those very few minutes or seconds of pleasure we get, from the material, superficial and often unimportant things.

Life without time to relax can become very tiring, and in a fast-paced, rapid society, we can lose track of time, which can mean things like working longer hours than healthy, or even excessive socialising. With so many friends or family to keep up with we can find ourselves making plans on top of one another. I’m not suggesting becoming a hermit as I’m a social butterfly myself. But, remember to recharge and to dedicate some time to yourself, so that you can kick your feet up and relax. There are proven benefits of doing so. Research shows that taking breaks improves your mood and is great for boosting your brain health. Also, we all experience stress, upsetness, and other negative emotions that we can’t always control, and at times these feelings may get the best of us. Taking some time for yourself at the end of the day perhaps, or intermittently during the day, can result in the easing of such feelings. Really, self-improvement or self-awareness is something we all ought to practise if we wish to better ourselves, and quite simply, downtime is part of that process.

So yes, downtime is sacred. Essentially, this time could be used for anything, such as, reading, baking, meditating, binge-watching the Twilight saga… anything you thoroughly enjoy which puts your mind at ease.
