How to Prepare and Care for a Spray Tan

By Abbie —

Most of us want gorgeous, glowing, bronze skin for the summer but tanning beds and direct sunlight aren’t always the best way to achieve it. UV rays are actually very harmful, especially if you’re not wearing an SPF, to your skin and have been proven to cause premature ageing, dark spots and even skin cancer.

If, like many, you prefer to tan in a less risky way you may want to see these tips on how to make your spray tan last as long as it can without going patchy! There’s a lot more care. Beautiful bronze tans start before you get your spray on! It’s important to have your skin ready for your appointment.

Spray tan: Preparation

  1. Shave before : Shaving can actually remove some of your tan so it is recommended you shave before you have your spray tan! The same applies for any method of hair removal, it’s not a good idea to remove hair while you’ve got a tan on.
  2. Shower around 8 hours before : Many people make the mistake of showering right before they have their tan applied. There are many reasons as to why this could interfere with the tan. Firstly, when you shower you’re opening up the pores on your body. When spray tans are applied on top of the open pores it can appear as little black specs, common on the legs, and is extremely hard to get off without removing all your tan. Leaving it 8 hours also gives the skin’s pH balance time to settle to the best level for your tan to develop on.
  3. Exfoliate : Many people know they should exfoliate before a tan but did you know, one round of buffing may not actually get all your dead skin off? You should really exfoliate for 3-4 days prior to your appointment. This will ensure your skin is in optimal condition for your tan to lay on and you’ll have less of a chance of flaking and patches developing when your tan is wearing off.
  4. NO DEO! : Deodorant is the devil when it comes to spray tans! Most technicians will give you wipes to remove any that you have on but it’s best you just come without applying it. Deodorant can cause the tan to settle differently leaving you with an uneven colour, your armpits can end up a lot lighter or patchy!
  5. Ask your technician : Not all tan formulas are the same and many technicians will have different preferences on how you should arrive, although, baggy clothing is always a must!

During your spray tan appointment

During your spray tan appointment your technician should provide you with paper knickers and sole protectors to cover the bottom of your feet, trust us… you want to wear those! You should also be provided with a hair net. Discuss with your technician your preference to colour, whether you want a light glow or you want to be darker than dark! Your technician should moisturise your knees, ankles, elbows and hands before spraying you, if they don’t, ask them to. This is a crucial step in tanning as these areas are more dry and are prone to developing a lot darker than the rest of the body.

After your spray tan appointment

  1. Showering : Your technician will tell you how long to keep your spray tan on for before you can wash it off, it’s usually between 6-8 hours. When washing it off, it’s best to use luke warm water and no harsh soaps. Don’t exfoliate when you first shower as it could buff the tan off still.
  2. Moisturiser : Use an oil-free moisturiser as oil based products can lead to your tan coming off quicker than it’s meant to. Always opt for more gentle products!
  3. Exfoliate : Your tan will come off naturally, it’s best to aid it along the way. Lightly exfoliate your body while you shower to help the tan stay smooth.
